The Red Riding Trilogy.

Plot

A rookie journalist looks to solve the increasingly vexing case of a serial killer on the loose.
Red Riding is a trilogy of movies based on a quartet of novels by David Peace. The books (and films) are fictionalized accounts of the investigation into the Yorkshire Ripper, a brutal serial killer that stalked the Yorkshire area of England in the 1970′s and 1980′s.

Intro

The first thing we see is the anti-hero (very common with a film Noir  standing covered in mud and dirt with a gun in his hand, there is a voice over which is the voice of the anti-hero, and he is telling us of the little girl who went missing, and possibly killed, by the man/women the anti-hero and just possibly killed the killer, with the gun he has in his hands before dropping it on to the ground. The lighting is a sepia and dark effect. With a close up shot of the anti-hero     so we can get a sense of who the character is and what he looks like. we then see a dark field and the camera starts to pan up a body which we then see to be a little girl with wings on her back and then fades into darkness.

Muholland Drive.

Plot

After a car wreck on the winding Mulholland Drive renders a woman amnesic, she nand a perky Hollywood-hopeful search for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality.

Intro

At the beginning of the opening title sequence we see men and women dancing, with black figures following them on the ground, there is also a bright purple background, then we a woman with a spot light shinning on her, which makes us think that we was among the dances and she has won some kind of compaction, this is the 'girl next door' character who is very common in a film noir, we know shes the 'girl next door' because shes a pretty, happy and cheerful character. From this scene we then go to a dark room which the camera seem to be panning up a bed then 'dives' in to the pillow, then we come out to a posh, fancy car driving very slowly up the windy road of Muholland drive, when we see who is in the car we can tell immediately that the woman in this car is a femme fatal as she has personal drivers also  shes in control of these men (which is a common component of a femme fatal, a femme fatal is also a very common character for a film noir) the femme fatal thinks shes in control of these men by saying when the car stops 'we don't stop here' she hasthe control until one of the men points a gun at her, then she cower's back scared, we quickly cut to two cars racing down the road then crashing in to the femme fatal's car, saving her from the inevitable death from the gun shot, after the crash we see the scene filled with smoke, but not with the film noir typical cigarette smoke, but the smoke from the cars, we then see a fire start from one of those cars.

what we did!!

My group decided to make the preliminary exercise more interesting and complicated with a dramatic story line which is unrealistic. We had to make sure match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule was used in our clip.

Film Noir

My Definition of film Noir and the conventions.

A French phrase literally meaning "black film" that developed in the early 40s; refers to a genre of mostly black-and-white films that blossomed in the post-war era in American cinema, with bleak subject matter and a somber, downbeat tone;  low-key lighting often in night scenes, camera angles (often canted or high-angle shots), the setting (the gloomy underworld of crime and corruption), iconography (guns, urban settings), characters (disillusioned, jaded), and other elements combined to present a dark atmosphere of pessimism, tension, cynicism, or oppression.

Definition of the Thriller Genre.

My Definition of a Thriller Genre.

'Thriller' is a type of genre which has curtain characteristics to allow the film to be placed in the 'Thriller' genre. This genre along with the rest of them have SUB-GENRES such as;
Period-thriller,
physiological-thriller,
conspiracy-thriller,
crime-thriller,
disaster-thriller,
mystery-thriller,
political-thriller,
religious-thriller,
supernatural-thriller,
techno-thriller.

Wikipedia's Definition of the Thriller Genre.

A thriller provides the sudden rush of emotions, excitement, sense of suspense and exhilaration that drive the narrative, sometimes subtly with peaks and lulls, sometimes at a constant, breakneck pace thrills. In this genre, the objective is to deliver a story with sustained tension, surprise, and a constant sense of impending doom. It keeps the audience cliff-hanging at the "edge of their seats" as the plot builds towards a climax. Thrillers tend to be fast-moving, psychological and threatening, mysterious and at times involve larger-scale villainy such as espionage, terrorism and conspiracy.

My personal opinion of the Thriller Genre.

My opinion on the thriller genre is that its the best type of film out there because you can get so many things in a thriller film such as; romance, passion, love, anti-hero, villain, femme fatal, tension and most important of all the sense of being scared and not know what will happen next (not all the time some are predictable), but still the best types of movies.

My person opinion what is the most popular sub-genre.

In  my personal opinion i would say that the most popular sub-genre is the supernatural thriller because we all believe in the supernatural a little and its something that we cant explain and people love things we cant explain, which would pull people in to seeing these types of films because it almost like taking a step in to the unknown.
such films are;
Paranormal Activity: for me is a film that is not scary but i love watching them.

Grave encounters: again not a scary film but something that i could watch again and again.

The In-keepers:  In my opinion a rubbish film, but someone could like it and get scared by the supernatural beings with in the film.

Scary Movie 1

‘Scary movie 1’ is among my top 4 favourite films because it’s a classic comedy with some very poor acting which makes the film very loveable because the smart yet silly script.

I love this film because of its deliberate mistakes which are put in to make the audience laugh and it does so.

Also scary movie to me is the best spoof film of all time and inspires other film creators to make spoofs of other films but will never live up the ‘Scary movies’.

Batman: The Dark Knight.

Batman: The Dark Knight is among my four favorite films of all time because the film has an amazing story line with great ‘villains’ and also and great comic book hero, which gives a great feel of wanted to become the ‘hero’ no matter what age you are.

The film has great tension when its needed the most in the film giving you a sense of being in the film its self and feeling apart of the story.

Also I admirer the quality of the ‘special affects’ with in the film, which shows you just how far modern cinema has come since it began.

Big Audience,
Big Actors and a
Big Story line,
which Batman and many others have these things, i personal am a great fan of blockbusters and i enjoy seeing the amazing acting and the perfection of special effects.
